Goitrous Foods – No raw Kale

Goitrous, meaning pertaining to noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid gland. Goiterous foods block iodine needed to produce thyroid hormones and can worsen thyroid function. My nutritionist advised me to best avoid them. The bold vegetables I paid special attention to, as they the others are not part of my diet anyway. Fruit did not matter, as I was off fructose any way. See My Hashimto’s for more details.

  • Cruciferous vegetables: Bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, canola, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, coy sum, collard greens, horseradish, kai-lan, kale, kohlrabi, mizuna, mustard greens, radishes, rapeseed, rapini, rutabagas, and turnips.
  • The Rosaceae family of fruits: almonds, apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, plums, raspberries, and strawberries.
  • Other: bamboo shoots, millet, soy, spinach, sweet potato, tapioca, and yuca.

But, you don’t have to give them up completely – just in their raw state. Cooking these foods lowers their goitrogenic content and makes them ok to eat.

  • Steaming crucifers until fully cooked reduces goitrogens by two-thirds.
  • Boiling crucifers for 30 minutes destroys 90 percent of the goitrogens.

I found this surprisingly easy. The hardest part is finding a green juice that does not contain kale or spinach.
